Environmental Education

One goal of the Freehold District is to educate the public about the importance of conserving our natural resources and improving our environment. Through education, we hope to reach the citizens of Middlesex and Monmouth counties with enough information to make conservation part of their daily lives. The environment, and our future, depends on it.

Three $2000 Scholarships

 In 2008 the District will award three $2000 scholarships (up from $1,500 in '07) to area college students majoring in a field related to conservation. The Neal W. Munch and Marvin "Mac" Clark Scholarships have been awarded annually for the past 27 years. The scholarships honor Neal Munch and Mac Clark for their many years of distinguished and dedicated service to the District. The Freehold Soil Conservation District Scholarship is also awarded annually.

All scholarship applicants must be:
bullet A New Jersey resident from Middlesex or Monmouth County.
bullet Entering their junior or senior year of college.
bullet Majoring in a field related to the conservation of our natural resources including, but not limited to: forestry, conservation, soil science, resource management, environmental studies, agriculture, environmental science or environmental education.

2008 Stewardship Materials Available for a Limited Time

Freehold Soil Conservation District is offering "Water is Life" stewardship activity books and educational items to teachers, youth leaders, and parents in Middlesex or Monmouth Counties. The materials are free, but quantities are limited. The order form can be found by clicking on 2008 order form. The deadline for ordering is January 31, 2008.

Educational Materials

The Freehold District offers a variety of free educational materials which are useful tools for teaching students and the public about the importance of conserving our natural resources. The materials are free to residents of Middlesex and Monmouth Counties. You can request materials using the order form, calling (732) 683-8500, faxing to (732) 683-9140 or by email at  krowe@freeholdscd.org. Quantities are limited.

bullet Partnerships for Watersheds: (13 min.) Explains what a watershed is and how water quality is effected by various sources of pollution. "Local" efforts are a key to watershed management. Grades 6-adult.
bullet Protecting our water: who's got the power?(28 min) Our streams are in danger and our drinking water is at risk. Explore the world of the stream and find out what you can do in your own backyard to help. Grades 4-adult
bullet The Good Earth: (5 min.) Scenic views of earth from Apollo 8 with sweeping aerial views of wildlife and natural settings. Grades 3-adult.
bullet The Great Chesapeake Bay Challenge (30 minutes): Students participate in stream clean-ups and water saving projects to improve the water quality of the Chesapeake Bay. Grades 4-adult.
bullet The Man Who Planted Trees: (30 min.) Actor Christopher Plummer narrates this animated film about 1 man, living in a barren, drought stricken region, who single handedly transforms the land into a great forest. Grades 6+
bullet The Stream Keeper: (25 min.) Starring Bill Nye -- The Science Guy -- in an upbeat journey through a watershed covering the basics of the hydrologic cycle, pollution, and destruction of wildlife habitat. Stream keepers show you how to take action to fix "broken streams." Grades 6+.
bullet Tina’s Journal(17 minutes) Contemporary and upbeat video introduces teenagers to waste reduction, resource conservation and recycling. Grades 6-12.
bullet Recycle This (37 minutes) is an "MTV" style video promoting the need to recycle. Grades 6-12.
bullet Storm Sewers Don't Lead to the Sewer Plant: (8 min) Musical video shows how storm drains lead to rivers and streams, not to sewage treatment plants. Grades 3-6
